A contrast in media coverage:

The Review | Associated Press: Praise Chavez, Grouse About Thatcher

When it comes to praising free market champions like Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the Associated Press still has trouble giving them their due. In their obituary this morning, the AP leads with, and continues to harp upon, the controversy stoked during her tenure as England’s Prime Minister, instead of her actual achievements.

Media Having Trouble Finding Right Angle On Obama’s Double-Homicide | The Onion – America’s Finest News Source

WASHINGTON—More than a week after President Barack Obama’s cold-blooded killing of a local couple, members of the American news media admitted Tuesday that they were still trying to find the best angle for covering the gruesome crime. “I know there’s a story in there somewhere,” said Newsweek editor Jon Meacham, referring to Obama’s home invasion and execution-style slaying of Jeff and Sue Finowicz on Apr. 8.

“Right now though, it’s probably best to just sit back and wait for more information to come in. After all, the only thing we know for sure is that our president senselessly murdered two unsuspecting Americans without emotion or hesitation.” Added Meacham, “It’s not so cut and dried.”

When Cruelty Is Cute – NYTimes.com

According to MoDo, Paul Ryan is:

…The cutest package that cruelty ever came in. Who will rain misery upon the heads of millions of Americans?

…A Scrooge with politics that are just a teensy bit heartless.

… Without a single silly scruple or toehold of conscience.

…Not as honest as most right-wing ayatollahs.

…a friendly guidance counselor who wants to teach us how to live, get us in shape, PowerPoint away the social safety net to make the less advantaged more self-reliant, as he makes the rich richer.

…going to burn the village in order “save” it..

…a white guy from an affluent family

…guided by “Irving Kristol’s ex-Trotskyites” turned neo-cons

…and part of the cult of Russian émigré and cult leader Ayn Rand.

…a supporter of the “Let Women Die Act,”

…going to allow the megarich Romney pay virtually no taxes.

… in a state of arrested adolescence,

…like a heroic teenagers atop a lofty mountain peak.

…intentionally going to hurt other people .

We are bringing back the Ugly Comment of the Week. This weekly feature had grown a bit depressing in the past and it was retired. But since the selection Paul Ryan as Mitt’s veep will, no doubt, bring out the shrieking harpies and full-on freak-out mode of some of our most esteemed “journalists,” it seems that we will have no shortage of ugly comments from now until November. I wouldn’t normally make such a post on a Monday but I think that Salon’s Joan Walsh will be hard to top this week.

Walsh:

Paul Ryan was born into a well-to-do Janesville, Wisc. family, part of the so-called “Irish mafia” that’s run the city’s construction industry since the 19th century.

Irish Mafia? Now that the How did that escape Romney’s vetting?
Walsh Continues:

When his lawyer father died young, sadly, the high-school aged Ryan received Social Security survivor benefits.
[ed. Not sure from the context here if father died sadly or if it was unfortunate that Ryan received survivor benefits]

But they didn’t go directly to supporting his family; by his own account, he banked them for college.
[ed. Gasp. The high school aged Ryan saved the money for college.]

He went to Miami University of Ohio, paying twice as much tuition as an Ohio resident would have; the in-state University of Wisconsin system (which I attended) apparently wasn’t good enough for Ryan.

[ed. What an elitist this Paul Ryan is. Miami of Ohio is like the Yale of Butler County, Ohio. Perhaps Ryan saw the results of the U of W system in Joan Walsh and made a hasty escape. ]

After his government-subsidized out-of-state education, [ed. Ryan is a hypocrite because he did not stay in Wisconsin and have his education further subsidized by paying in-state tuition] the pride of Janesville left college and went to work for government, where he’s spent his entire career, first serving Republican legislators and then in his own Congressional seat, with occasional stints at his [ed Irish Mafia] family-owned construction business when he needed a job (reportedly he also drove an Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile for a while)
[ed. Tee Hee Wiener Mobile. Note to Ms. Walsh: Elitist mockery is never a good strategy when you look like this:]

Apologies for the pic.  Birthday girl coming up.

It’s one thing to try and sell magazines with mock-titilating covers. It’s another to just grab some over-used stock photo.

… is a Palindrome.  (ht rhhardin in Althouse comment section) regarding catty WaPo article by Diana Reese who says things like:

When Palin took to the makeshift stage in the middle of a Missouri farm field, she was dressed more for the part of Hollywood celebrity than serious politician. I know someone’s going to remind me that just last week, I said it was sexist to focus on the wardrobes of women in politics.

But it was hard for me to take Palin seriously dressed as she was.

First, her shoes: Five-inch wedges. Her black capris weren’t quite skin-tight but tight enough, and her t-shirt with its Superman logo (a Steelman campaign shirt emblazoned with “Our freedom. Our fight.”) emphasized her figure. She never once removed her oversized sunglasses.

I’m sorry, but I’d like my minister, my doctor and yes, my politicians, to look and dress for their parts.

Village Voice Writer: Gay Republicans Like “Jewish Nazis”

Michael Musto, the Village Voice’s longtime nightlife columnist, wrote on his blog today that the gay Republican group GOProud are like “Jewish Nazis” or “Black Klan members” because of their endorsement of Mitt Romney.

Last gay Jewish Holocaust survivor dies
